Jackpot

Is it lucky
That the sun comes up every morning?
Or that you happen to be
There to witness it?
How many sunrises
Have happened in your life?
And how many excuses do you have
For missing most of them?
I think you have been lucky
To see a few sunrises
In spite of your sleepiness.
The miracles of Life keep slipping by
Like the mighty Mohawk flowing.
Last night, at sunset, I saw the herons there
Pierce the violet penumbra of ebbing light.
I saw the ducks skate on the river,
Making soft landings.
No one else was there
But Beauty draws me irresistibly
Toward its next encore.
Remember,
Tomorrow’s sunrise
Will bring another opportunity.
Maybe you’ll get lucky!

  9. These were my thoughts the other night as I stood in my driveway, enjoying that huge moon and the stars. Little boys asleep. Peace. Sigh. Lucky indeed.

  11. I have more excuses than I have sunrises. If the universe allows and I should be given the healing and more time that will change and not be taken for granted. Another very beautiful poem.

  12. Excellently written! We are too busy in our day to day living to appreciate sunrises, sunsets, and the moments of beauty that inhabit our day. The jackpot is not in money or the making of it ... it is in the magical moments when we stop to view our surroundings and let them illuminate our days. Appreciate the reminder!

  13. I, like most people, miss a lot of life because of sleep - but you're right. We should take advantage of the opportunity to be witness to the beauty all around us, as often as possible. Nice reminder...thanks.
